Water Quality

Water Source

The City of Amsterdam receives its' water supply from three impounding reservoirs at the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains in Saratoga County. Total capacity is 2.4 billion gallons servicing a community of 19,600 people with a safe yield of 10 million gallons per day. Currently, the system's water demand is 5.7 million gallons per day. Upon entering a 24" pipe, the water is screened, metered and disinfected with chlorine dioxide. The raw water then travels through 15 miles of pipe to the City of Amsterdam.

Water Treatment Plant

The City of Amsterdam Water Filtration Plant operates 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. We are professionally staffed with a Chief Plant Operator, Senior Plant Operator, Lab Technician, Operator Technician and, six Operators. All Plant Operators are licensed with the New York State Department of Health. The water quality is monitored continuously by properly trained personnel, as we remain to be in compliance with all State and Federal water regulations.

Amsterdam is fortunate to have an abundant water supply, which can be expanded, as the City and development grows. The City also takes pride in its' greatest asset by undergoing water system improvements as needed. Most recently the City of Amsterdam has upgraded its water filtration system to include Trident up flow clarification filtration and carbon contactors for improved finished water quality. Randy Gardinier is the Chief Plant Operator for the City of Amsterdam water treatment plant.

Water Quality

Last year the City of Amsterdam analyzed samples which included both physical and bacteriological analysis and sent samples to private labs for testing of other contaminants. All sampling is mandated by State and Federal regulations. This report is a picture of quality of water we provided last year. Included in this report:

  • Where your water comes from
  • What it contains
  • Water system improvements
  • How your water complies with Environmental Protection Agency and New York Department of Health (NYSDOH) Standards.

We are committed to providing you with information because you are the customer. For more information about your drinking water, please contact the Water Filtration Plant.
