The finished product will be design guidelines that are intended to provide property owners and contractors assistance as they plan alterations to their buildings as well as standardize the information for the City’s Code Enforcement/Building department. It is the intent of this RFP to have the successful firm supply complete, enforceable, adopted design guidelines.

Currently there is little cohesion to the buildings or site development in downtown Amsterdam. Design Guidelines would work to establish a set of high-quality and aesthetic standards to create a cohesive and attractive downtown. These guidelines would dictate both renovations and new construction, including site work. The creation of design guidelines will apply to the entire DRI boundary area, but have specific regulations developed for East Main Street and Bridge Street to emphasize these key corridors. The guidelines will address facade improvements, signage regulations, lighting, landscaping, and beautification efforts to create a special coordinated character to the downtown.

The City of Amsterdam received funding for this project through the Department of State to prepare design Guidelines as a DRI project for the City of Amsterdam,Montgomery County. These guidelines will work as a precursor to the anticipated Downtown Improvement Fund, which will be available for building owners to apply for funding for building renovations which adhere to these guidelines.
