The Amsterdam Civil Service Commission oversees the hiring practices of the City of Amsterdam as well as the Greater Amsterdam School District and Amsterdam Housing Authority. It is their responsibility to see that people are hired who meet the requirements of the merit and fitness system as mandated by the Civil Service Law.
Some of the City, School District and Amsterdam Housing Authority positions require an exam administered by the Civil Service Commission. When this is the case, a list of exam announcements will be posted here, as well as on the 3rd floor of City Hall. These exam announcements contain important information about minimum qualifications for a given position, exam fees, exam scope and description, last filing date and test dates.
If you are interested in applying for a position that requires a civil services exam such as clerical, accounting clerk, firefighter or police officer, you should file to take the civil service exam prior to exam filing date. If the position you are interested in does not require you to take an exam, such as a Laborer, Teachers Aide or Bus Driver, you should apply directly to our Employee Relations Department or the Personnel Department in which you are seeking employment.
The Commission meets on the first Monday of each month at 9 a.m. in the City Council Chambers located in City Hall. These meetings are free and open to the public if you have any questions or concerns.
