Residence Requirements:          

Greater Amsterdam School District: None but preference may be given to Greater Amsterdam School District residents.  Must live in the School District for a period of at least one (1) month immediately preceding the date of the written test.

City of Amsterdam:        None but preference may be given to City of Amsterdam residents.  Must live in the City of Amsterdam for a period of at least one (1) month immediately preceding the date of the written test.

Distinguishing Features of the Class:     The work involves responsibility for the performance of standardized clerical tasks and the full-time or substantial part-time operation of a computer for the entry and retrieval of information using software to produce printed material such as letters, memoranda and forms.  Specific duties vary with the needs of the department.  Procedures are usually fixed but detailed instructions are given for new or difficult assignments.  Work is reviewed by direct observation, checking completed work, periodic or spot checks, cross-checking or other steps in the clerical process.  Does related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Graduation from high school or possession equivalency diploma.

 

Subject of Examination:

1.      Alphabetizing:  These questions test your ability to file material in alphabetical order.

2        Clerical Operations with Letters and Numbers: These questions test your skills and abilities in clerical operations involving,comparing, checking and counting.  The questions require you to follow the specific directions given for each question which may involve alphabetizing, comparing, checking and counting given groups of letters and/or numbers. 

Calculators are recommended for this exam:     Quiet, hand-held, solar or battery-powered calculators are permitted. Devices with typewriter keyboards are prohibited.

 

This written examination is being prepared and rated by the NYS Department of Civil Service in accordance with Section 23-2 of the Civil Service Law.  The provisions of the New York Civil Service rules and regulations dealing with the rating of examinations will apply to this written examination.

Performance Test:  Candidates who receive a passing score on the written test must also qualify on the performance test in Keyboarding.  The Keyboarding test will consist of a test in accuracy and speed of keyboarding at a minimum acceptance of 30 words per minute.  The qualifying performance test will be given at a later date and the candidates will be notified as to the time and place.

Keyboarding Performance Test Waiver: f a candidate has already passed a 35 word per minute or higher Keyboarding performance or Typist test administered by either any Civil Service Agency in New York State within 2 year of the date of the written test waiver of the performance exam may be made. It is the candidate responsibility to submit proof.

Application:

Application forms may be obtained at the Civil Service Office in Amsterdam City Hall between the hours of 8:00 A.M – 12:00 P.M or by sending a stamped self-addressed legal envelope to:

Applications received post-marked after the filing date deadline will not be accepted. The applicant should make sure every question on the application is answered and that the application is complete in all respects.  All statements made by candidates in their application are subject to verification. This department does not acknowledge receipt of the applications.  Candidates will be notified of the disposition of their application. Candidates will be notified by letter, of when and where to appear to take the written test.  If candidate   shave not received a notice to appear for the written test three (3) days prior to the exam date, they should call our office at 518-841-4341.

Application Fees:

A $10.00 non-refundable application fee is required for each separately numbered examination for which you apply.  The required fee must accompany your application.  Send certified check or money-order payable to CITY OF AMSTERDAM and write the examination number(s) and your Social Security Number on your check or money order.  Do not send cash.  As no refund will be made,you are urged to compare your qualifications carefully with the requirements for admission and file only for those examinations for which you are clearly qualified.  

Sabbath Observers/Disabled Candidates/Military Members:

Applicants whose religious beliefs or military service prevent their taking examinations on the scheduled date and disabled candidates who require special accommodations to take the test should indicate the need for special arrangements on their application. Candidates who are called to military service after filing an application should send requests for an alternate test date to the Amsterdam Civil Service Commission as soon as possible before the test date.

Veteran’s Credit:

Veterans or disabled veterans who are eligible for additional credit must submit an application for veteran’s credit with their application for examination or by the date of the establishment of the resulting Eligible List.  Applications for veteran’s credit are available from this office.  Any candidate who applies for such credit must provide proof of military status to receive the conditional credit.  No credit may be granted after the establishment of the eligible list.  It is the responsibility of the candidate to provide appropriate documentary proof indicating that the service was in time of war, as defined in Section 86 of Civil Service Law, and that the candidate received an honor discharge or was released under honorable conditions in order to be certified at a score including veterans credit.

Alternate Test Date:

Alternative test dates may be arranged upon review of the circumstances according to the Alternate Test Date policy established by this department.  Under specific circumstances an alternate test date may be arranged. Your request with written documentation must be received in this office no later than two (2) weeks preceding the examination.

If any emergency prevents you from appearing for the examination, please notify this office (841-4362) no later than 9:00 A.M on the Monday following the test date, (Tuesday if Monday is a legal holiday)providing verifiable documentation of the reason.  A determination will be made as to if you will be scheduled for an alternate test date.

Multiple Exam Takers:  If you have applied for both State and local government examinations, you must notify Amsterdam Civil Service of your intent to take both a State and a local government examination.  When taking both a State and a local government examination you will be required to take all your examinations at a State examination center. You will be advised by letter when and where to report for your examination.

If you have applied for other local examinations examination, call or write to each Civil Service Agency to make arrangements no later than two weeks before the date of examination, as to which test site you will be taking the examination.

Change of Address:

It is the responsibility of the candidate to notify the Amsterdam Civil Service of any change in name or address.  No attempt will be made to locate candidates who have moved.

Application Fee Waiver:

A waiver of application fee will be allowed if you are unemployed and primarily responsible for the support of a household.  In addition, a waiver of application fee will be allowed if you are determined eligible for Medicaid, or receiving Supplemental Security Income Payments, or Public Assistance (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families/Family Assistance or Safety Net Assistance) or are certified Job Training Partnership Act/Workforce Investment Act eligible through a State or Local Social Service Agency. All claims for application fee waiver are subject to verification.  If you can verify eligibility for application fee waiver, complete a “Request for Application Fee Waiver and Certification:form and submit it with your application by the close of business on the application deadline as listed on the examination announcement.
