DistinguishingFeatures of the Class: Thework involves responsibility for the performance of standardized clerical tasksand the full-time or substantial part-time operation of a computer for theentry and retrieval of information using software to produce printed materialsuch as letters, memoranda, and forms. Specific duties vary with the needs of the department. Procedures are usually fixed but detailedinstructions are given for new or difficult assignments. Work is reviewed by direct observation,checking completed work, periodic or spot checks, cross-checking, or othersteps in the clerical process. Doesrelated work as required.

1. Alphabetizing: These questions test your ability tofile material in alphabetical order.
2 ClericalOperations with Letters and Numbers: Thesequestions test your skills and abilities in clerical operations involving,comparing, checking, and counting. Thequestions require you to follow the specific directions given for each questionwhich may involve alphabetizing, comparing, checking, and counting given groupsof letters and/or numbers.
Calculators are recommended for this exam: Quiet, hand-held solar, orbattery-powered calculators are permitted. Devices with typewriter keyboards are prohibited.
This written examination is being prepared and ratedby the NYS Department of Civil Service in accordance with Section 23-2 of theCivil Service Law. The provisions of theNew York Civil Service rules and regulations dealing with the rating ofexaminations will apply to this written examination.

PerformanceTest: Candidateswho receive a passing score on the written test must also qualify on theperformance test in Keyboarding. TheKeyboarding test will consist of a test in accuracy and speed of keyboarding ata minimum acceptance of 25 words per minute. The qualifying performance test will be given later and the candidateswill be notified as to the time and place.
KeyboardingPerformance Test Waiver: If a candidate has already passed a 30 word per minuteor higher Keyboarding performance or Typist test administered by either anyCivil Service Agency in New York State within 2 years of the date of thewritten test waiver of the performance exam may be made. It is thecandidate responsibility to submit proof.

Applications receivedpost-marked after the filing date deadline will not beaccepted. The applicant should make sureevery question on the application is answered and that the application iscomplete in all respects. All statementsmade by candidates in their application are subject to verification. This department does not acknowledge receiptof the applications. Candidates will benotified of the disposition of their application. Candidates will be notified by letter, ofwhen and where to appear to take the written test. If candidates have not received a notice toappear for the written test three (3) days prior to the exam date, they shouldcall our office at (518)841-4341.
Donot interpret a notice to appear for, or actual participation in, theexamination as an indication that you fully meet the announced requirements.Depending on the time available before an examination, applicants may beadmitted based on statements made on the application or conditionally admittedwithout prior review of the application. Under these circumstances, candidatesnot meeting the requirements will be disqualified and notified of suchdisqualification. Candidates subsequently disqualified after taking the testwill not be notified of their score.
A $10.00 non-refundable application fee is requiredfor each separately numbered examination for which you apply. The required fee must accompany yourapplication. Send check or money-orderpayable to CITY OF AMSTERDAM and write the examination number on your check ormoney order. Do not send cash. As no refund will be made, you are urged tocompare your qualifications carefully with the requirements for admission andfile only for those examinations for which you are clearly qualified.
Sabbath Observers/DisabledCandidates/Military Members:
Applicants whose religious beliefs or military serviceprevent their taking examinations on the scheduled date and disabled candidateswho require special accommodations to take the test should indicate the needfor special arrangements on their application. Candidates who are called to military service after filing anapplication should send requests for an alternate test date to the AmsterdamCivil Service Commission as soon as possible before the test date.
Veterans or disabled veterans who are eligible foradditional credit must apply for veteran’s credit with their application forexamination or by the date of the establishment of the resulting EligibleList. Applications for veteran’s creditare available from this office. Anycandidate who applies for such credit must provide proof of military status toreceive the conditional credit. Nocredit may be granted after the establishment of the eligible list. It is the responsibility of the candidate toprovide appropriate documentary proof indicating that the service was in timeof war, as defined in Section 86 of Civil Service Law, and that the candidatereceived an honor discharge or was released under honorable conditions to becertified at a score including veteran’s credit.
Alternate Test Date:
Alternative test dates may be arranged upon review ofthe circumstances according to the Alternate Test Date policy established bythis department. Under specificcircumstances an alternate test date may be arranged. Your request with written documentation mustbe received in this office no later than two (2) weeks preceding theexamination.
If any emergency prevents you from appearing for theexamination, please notify this office (841-4362) no later than 9:00 A.M on theMonday following the test date, (Tuesday if Monday is a legal holiday)providing verifiable documentation of the reason. A determination will be made as to if youwill be scheduled for an alternate test date.
Multiple ExamTakers: If you have applied for both State andlocal government examinations, you must notify Amsterdam Civil Service of yourintent to take both a State and a local government examination. When taking both a State and a localgovernment examination you will be required to take all your examinations at a stateexamination center. You will be advisedby letter when and where to report for your examination.
Ifyou have applied for other local examinations examination, call, or write toeach Civil Service Agency to make arrangements no later than two weeks beforethe date of examination, as to which test site you will be taking theexamination.
Change of Address:
It is the responsibility of the candidate to notifythe Amsterdam Civil Service of any change in name or address. No attempt will be made to locate candidateswho have moved.
A waiver of application fee will be allowed if you areunemployed and primarily responsible for the support of a household. In addition, a waiver of application fee willbe allowed if you are determined eligible for Medicaid, or receivingSupplemental Security Income Payments, or Public Assistance (TemporaryAssistance for Needy Families/Family Assistance or Safety Net Assistance) orare certified Job Training Partnership Act/Workforce Investment Act eligiblethrough a State or Local Social Service Agency. All claims for application fee waiver are subject to verification. If you can verify eligibility for applicationfee waiver, complete a “Request for Application Fee Waiver and Certification:form and submit it with your application by the close of business on theapplication deadline as listed on the examination announcement.
