Employment Opportunities:   This examination is being held to establish an eligible list to fill this titlein the Amsterdam School District.

Salary:            AmsterdamSchool District     starting salary$27,266

 

Residence Requirements:        GreaterAmsterdam School District: None but Preference may be given to city ofAmsterdam Residents.  To meet thepreference, a candidate must have been a legal resident of the City ofAmsterdam for a period of at least one (1) month immediately preceding the dateof the written test.

Distinguishing Features of theClass:  The work involves responsibility for theperformance of moderately difficult clerical related tasks requiring theexercise of independent judgment in the application of prescribed procedures,and the full-time or substantial part-time operation of a computer for theentry and retrieval of information. Duties in this class may involve public contract.  Work is reviewed by observation, crosschecks, periodic or spot checks, cross checking, or other steps in the clericalprocess.  An employee in this class mayalso supervise the work of others.  Doesrelated work as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

 

Candidatemust be permanently employed in the competitive class for the Amsterdam SchoolDistrict and must have served continuously on a permanent basis for at leastone (1) year as a Key Board Specialist.

Subject of Examination:

Spelling:          Thesequestions test for the ability to spell words that are used in written businesscommunications.

 

Grammar, Usage, Punctuation:          Thegrammar and usage questions test for the ability to apply the basic rules ofgrammar and usage.  The punctuationquestions test for a knowledge of the correct placement of punctuation marks insentences.

 

 

Keyboarding Practices:          Thesequestions test for a knowledge of preferred practices in such areas as letterformat, capitalization, hyphenation, plurals, possessives, word division, wordand figure style for

numbers,and common proofreading marks.  Inaddition, you will be given a passage to proofread and asked questions abouthow to correct the errors in the passage.

 

Office Record Keeping:          Thesequestions evaluate your ability to perform common office record keepingtasks.  The test consists of two or more“sets” of questions, each set concerning a different problem.  Typical record keeping problems might involvethe organization or collation of data from several sources; scheduling;maintaining a record system using running balances; or completion of a tablesummarizing data using totals, subtotals, averages, and percentages.

 

Office Practices:         Thesequestions test for knowledge of generally agreed-upon practices governing thehandling of situations which stenographers, typists, and secretaries encounterin their work, as well as knowledge of efficient and effective methods used toaccomplish office tasks.  The questionswill cover such topics as planning workflow; setting priorities; dealingeffectively with staff, visitors, and callers; filing and retrievinginformation; safeguarding confidentiality; using office equipment; and makingprocedural decisions and recommendations which contribute to a well-managedoffice.

 

Calculators are recommended for this exam: Quiet,hand-held, solar, or battery-powered calculators are permitted.  Devices with typewriter keyboards areprohibited.

Thiswritten examination is being prepared and rated by the NYS Department of CivilService in accordance with Section 23-2 of the Civil Service Law.  The provisions of the New York Civil Servicerules and regulations dealing with the rating of examinations will apply tothis written examination.

Application:

Applicationforms may be obtained at the Civil Service Office in Amsterdam City Hallbetween the hours of 8:30 A.M – 12:00 P.M or by sending a stampedself-addressed legal envelope to:

Applicationsreceived post-marked after the filing date deadline will not beaccepted.  The applicant should make sureevery question on the application is answered and that the application iscomplete in all respects.  All statementsmade by candidates in their application are subject to verification.  This department does not acknowledge receiptof the applications.  Candidates will benotified of the disposition of their application.  Candidates will be notified by letter, ofwhen and where to appear to take the written test.  If candidates have not received a notice toappear for the written test three (3) days prior to the exam date, they shouldcall our office at (518)841-4341.

Do not interpret a notice to appear for, or actualparticipation in, the examination as an indication that you fully meet theannounced requirements. Depending on the time available before an examination,applicants may be admitted based on statements made on the application orconditionally admitted without prior review of the application. Under thesecircumstances, candidates not meeting the requirements will be disqualified andnotified of such disqualification. Candidates subsequently disqualified aftertaking the test will not be notified of their score.

 

 

 

ApplicationFees:

A $10.00non-refundable application fee is required for each separately numberedexamination for which you apply.  Therequired fee must accompany your application. Send certified check or money-order payable to CITY OF AMSTERDAM andwrite the examination number(s) and your Social Security Number on your checkor money order.  Do not sendcash.  As no refund will be made,you are urged to compare your qualifications carefully with the requirementsfor admission and file only for those examinations for which you are clearlyqualified.

SabbathObservers/Disabled Candidates/Military Members:

Applicantswhose religious beliefs or military service prevent their taking examinationson the scheduled date and disabled candidates who require specialaccommodations to take the test should indicate the need for specialarrangements on their application. Candidates who are called to military service after filing anapplication should send requests for an alternate test date to the AmsterdamCivil Service Commission as soon as possible before the test date.

 

Veteran’sCredit:

Veteransor disabled veterans who are eligible for additional credit must apply forveteran’s credit with their application for examination or by the date of theestablishment of the resulting Eligible List. Applications for veteran’s credit are available from this office.  Any candidate who applies for such creditmust provide proof of military status to receive the conditional credit.  No credit may be granted after the establishmentof the eligible list.  It is theresponsibility of the candidate to provide appropriate documentary proofindicating that the service was in time of war, as defined in Section 86 ofCivil Service Law, and that the candidate received an honor discharge or wasreleased under honorable conditions to be certified at a score includingveteran’s credit.

 

 

AlternateTest Date:

Alternativetest dates may be arranged upon review of the circumstances according to theAlternate Test Date policy established by this department.  Under specific circumstances an alternatetest date may be arranged.  Your requestwith written documentation must be received in this office no later than two(2) weeks preceding the examination.

If anyemergency prevents you from appearing for the examination, please notify thisoffice (841-4362) no later than 9:00 A.M on the Monday following the test date,(Tuesday if Monday is a legal holiday) providing verifiable documentation ofthe reason.  A determination will be madeas to if you will be scheduled for an alternate test date.

MultipleExam Takers:           If you have applied for both Stateand local government examinations, you must notify Amsterdam Civil Service ofyour intent to take both a State and a local government examination.  When taking both a State and a local governmentexamination you will be required to take all your examinations at a stateexamination center.  You will be advisedby letter when and where to report for your examination.

If you have applied for other localexaminations examination, call or write to each Civil Service Agency to makearrangements no later than two weeks before the date of examination, as towhich test site you will be taking the examination.

 

Changeof Address:

It is theresponsibility of the candidate to notify the Amsterdam Civil Service of anychange in name or address.  No attemptwill be made to locate candidates who have moved.

Application Fee Waiver:

A waiverof application fee will be allowed if you are unemployed and primarilyresponsible for the support of a household. In addition, a waiver of application fee will be allowed if you aredetermined eligible for Medicaid, or receiving Supplemental Security IncomePayments, or Public Assistance (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families/FamilyAssistance or Safety Net Assistance) or are certified Job Training PartnershipAct/Workforce Investment Act eligible through a State or Local Social ServiceAgency.  All claims for application feewaiver are subject to verification.  Ifyou can verify eligibility for application fee waiver, complete a “Request forApplication Fee Waiver and Certification: form and submit it with yourapplication by the close of business on the application deadline as listed onthe examination announcement.
