Vacancies: This examination is being held toestablish an eligible list to fill future vacancies as they occur in theAmsterdam Fire Department.
Starting Salary: $36,356.00
GeneralStatement Duties: This class performs general firefighting andfire prevention duties. Employees inthis class perform standardized manual work in combating and preventing fires,often under hazardous conditions. Although an employee is subject to firefighting duty at any time,regular assignments include a substantial element of routine maintenance andcustodial work on station and equipment. Regular assignments also include responding to emergency medical callsand rendering emergency medical service to members of the public. All work is performed under the generalsupervision of a fire officer and inspected upon completion. Does related work as required.
MinimumQualifications: Graduation from High School or possessionof a High School equivalence or comparable diploma as described in section 58of the Civil Service Law;
Attime of appointment, candidate must be 20 years of age & show proof ofDriver License.
Other SpecialRequirements for Acceptance of Application: Possession of New York State Departmentof Health certification as Emergency Medical Technician -D (EMT-D) at time ofappointment and maintain EMT D certification for the duration ofemployment. Appointees may be requiredto obtain and maintain Paramedic (EMT – P) certification for duration ofemployment. Appointees MUST passcandidate physical agility test, fitness and medical examination as administered.
ResidenceRequirements: Candidate must be legal residents ofMontgomery, Fulton, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Otsego, or HerkimerCounty for at least one (1) month immediately preceding the date of the writtentest. Preference in appointment may begiven to successfully candidates who have been legal residents of the City ofAmsterdam for at least one month prior to the date of certification and at timeof appointment. Please make sure Civil Service Commission has your correct address atall times.
Driver’sLicense: A valid NYS Driver’s Class D license isrequired at the time of appointment and for the duration of employment.
Subjectsof examination: A written test designed toevaluate knowledge, skills and /or abilities in the following areas:
1. Abilityto learn and apply information Thesequestions test for the ability to learn new information and apply it to answerquestions effectively. Candidates will read information presented in a TrainingLesson and then answer questions regarding the information and procedurescovered in the Training Lesson. All information needed to answer the questionswill be provided in the Training Lesson, and candidates will be able to referto the Training Lesson when answering the questions. Some of the questions mayrequire candidates to combine information from different portions of what hasbeen learned in the Training Lesson. No prior knowledge of any specific job orsubject matter is needed.
2. Basic arithmetic This section requires candidates to use basic arithmetic(add, subtract, multiply, divide) to find a missing value in a table ofnumbers. Candidates will not need to refer to the Training Lesson or any othersection of the test to answer the questions in this section. All informationneeded to answer each question will be contained in this section. No knowledgeof firefighting or any other job is required. Candidates should bring ahand-held battery- or solar-powered calculator for use on this test. Candidateswill not be permitted to use the calculator function on their cell phone.
3. Reading comprehension These questions testfor the ability to understand written materials (e.g., sentences, passages) andanswer questions about the information presented. Candidates will be providedwith reading passages, followed by questions related to each passage. Each questionwill require candidates to demonstrate that they have read and understood theinformation contained in the passage.
4. Situational judgment Thissection tests for the ability to identify appropriate and effective responsesto work-related challenges. Candidates will be presented with several scenariosthat reflect the types of challenges one could encounter in a work environment.They will then be asked to rate the effectiveness of a number of possibleresponses to each scenario.

Candidates not having access toa computer or the internet may request copy of the test guide from themunicipal civil service office conducting this examination using the contactinformation found elsewhere on this announcement.
Use ofCalculators is allowed. Candidates arepermitted to use quiet, hand-held solar or battery powered calculators or sliderules. Devices with typewriter keyboards,spell checkers, personal digital assistants, address books, languagetranslators, dictionaries, or any similar devices are prohibited. NoCell Phones allowed as calculators.
Ifan emergency prevents you from appearing for the examination, please notifythis office no later than 9:00 am on the Monday following the test date,(Tuesday if Monday is a holiday) providing verifiable documentation of thereason. A determination will be made ifyou will be scheduled for an alternate test date.
Additionalcredits for children of Firefighters and Police Officers killed in the line ofduty: In conformance with Section 85-a of theCivil Service Law, children of firefighters and police officers killed in theline of duty shall be entitled to receive an additional ten points in acompetitive examination for original appointment in the same municipality inwhich his or her parent has served. Ifyou are qualified to participate in this examination and are a child of a Firefighteror Police Officer killed in the line of duty in this municipality, pleaseinform this office of this matter when you submit your application forexamination. A candidate claiming suchcredit has a minimum of two months from the application deadline to provide thenecessary documentation to verify additional credit eligibility. However, no credit may be added after theeligible list has been established.

Applicationsreceived post-marked after the filing date deadline will not be accepted. The applicant should make sure every question on the application isanswered and that the application is complete in all respects. All statements made by candidates in theirapplication are subject to verification. This department does not acknowledge receipt of the applications. Candidates will be notified of thedisposition of their application. Candidates will be notified by letter, of when and where to appear totake the written test. If candidateshave not received a notice to appear for the written test three (3) days priorto the exam date, they should call our office at (518)841-4341.
Donot interpret a notice to appear for, or actual participation in, theexamination as an indication that you fully meet the announced requirements.Depending on the time available before an examination, applicants may beadmitted on the basis of statements made on the application or conditionallyadmitted without prior review of the application. Under these circumstances,candidates not meeting the requirements will be disqualified and notified ofsuch disqualification. Candidates subsequently disqualified after taking thetest will not be notified of their score.
ApplicationFees: A $25.00 non-refundable application feeis required for each separately numbered examination for which you apply. The required fee must accompany yourapplication. Send a check or money orderpayable to City of Amsterdam. Write theexamination number(s) and the applicant’s name on the check or moneyorder. DO NOT SEND CASH. Ifyour application is disapproved, the fee will not be refunded. You should carefully review the announcedminimum qualifications and any residence requirements and apply only for thoseexaminations for which you clearly qualify.
ReligiousObserver/Disabled Candidates/Military Members: Applicants whose religious beliefs ormilitary service prevent their taking examinations on the scheduled date anddisabled candidates who require special accommodations to take the test shouldindicate the need for special arrangements. Military Service Members: If you apply for anexamination during the filing period but are on active military duty on thedate of examination is scheduled, you may request a military makeupexamination. Contact Amsterdam CivilService for more information. If you areon active duty or discharged after the filing period has begun, you may applyfor the examination up to ten days before the test date.
Section 23.2Statement: This examination will be prepared andrated in accordance with Section 23.2 of the Civil Service Law. The provisions of New York State CivilService Law, rules and regulations dealing with the preparation and rating ofexaminations will apply to this examination.
Multiple ExamTakers: If you have applied for both State andlocal government examinations, you must notify Amsterdam Civil Service of yourintent to take both a State and a local government examination. When taking both a State and a localgovernment examination you will be required to take all your examinations at aState examination center. You will beadvised by letter when and where to report for your examination.
Ifyou have applied for other local examinations examination, call or write toeach Civil Service Agency to make arrangements no later than two weeks before thedate of examination, as to which test site you will be taking the examination.
Veteran’sCredit: Veterans or disabled veteranswho are eligible for additional credit must submit an application for veteran’scredit with their application for examination or at any time between the datesof their application for examination and the date of establishment of theresulting eligible list. Applications for veteran’s credit are available fromthis office. Veteran’s credits can only be added to a passing score on theexamination.
EffectiveJanuary 1, 1998, the State Constitution was amended to permit a candidatecurrently in the armed forces to apply for and be conditionally grantedveteran’s credit in examinations. Anycandidate who applies for such credit must provide proof of military status toreceive the conditional credit. No credit may be granted after theestablishment of the list. It is theresponsibility of the candidate to provide appropriate documentary proofindicating the service was in time of war, as defined in Section 85 of CivilService Law, and that the candidate received an honorable discharge or wasreleased under honorable conditions in order to be certified at a scoreincluding veteran’s credits.
Change ofAddress: It is the responsibility of the candidate tonotify the Amsterdam Civil Service of any change in name or address for the durationof the eligible list. No attempt will bemade to locate candidates who have moved.

Application FeeWaiver: A waiver of application fee will beallowed if you are unemployed and primarily responsible for the support of ahousehold. In addition, a waiver ofapplication fee will be allowed if you determined eligible for Medicaid, orreceiving Supplemental Security Income Payments, or Public Assistance (TemporaryAssistance for Needy Families/ Family Assistance or Safety Net Assistance) orare certified Job Training Partnership Act/Workforce Investment Act eligible through a State or Local Social ServiceAgency. All claims for application feewaiver are subject to verification. Ifyou can verify eligibility for application fee waiver, complete a “Request forApplication Fee Waiver and Certification” form and submit it with yourapplication by the close of business on the application deadline as listed onthe examination announcement.
