Vacancies: Thisexamination is being held to establish an eligible list to fill futurevacancies as they occur in the Amsterdam Fire Department.
Starting Salary: $35,469.65
General Statement Duties: Thisclass performs general firefighting and fire prevention duties. Employees in this class perform standardizedmanual work in combating and preventing fires, often under hazardousconditions. Although an employee issubject to firefighting duty at any time, regular assignments include asubstantial element of routine maintenance and custodial work on station andequipment. Regular assignments alsoinclude responding to emergency medical calls and rendering emergency medicalservice to members of the public. Allwork is performed under the general supervision of a fire officer and inspectedupon completion. Does related work asrequired.
Minimum Qualifications: Graduationfrom High School or possession of a High School equivalence or comparablediploma as described in section 58 of the Civil Service Law;
Attime of appointment, candidate must be 20 years of age & show proof ofDriver License.
Other Special Requirements forAcceptance of Application: Possession of New York StateDepartment of Health certification as Emergency Medical Technician -D (EMT-D)at time of appointment and maintain EMT D certification for the duration ofemployment. Appointees may be requiredto obtain and maintain Paramedic (EMT – P) certification for duration ofemployment. Appointees MUST passcandidate physical agility test, fitness and medical examination asadministered.
Residence Requirements: Candidatemust be legal residents of Montgomery, Fulton, Saratoga, Schenectady,Schoharie, Otsego, or Herkimer County for at least one (1) month immediatelypreceding the date of the written test. Preference in appointment may be given to successfully candidates whohave been legal residents of the City of Amsterdam for at least one month priorto the date of certification and at time of appointment. Pleasemake sure Civil Service Commission has your correct address at all times.
Driver’s License: Avalid NYS Driver’s Class D license is required at the time of appointment andfor the duration of employment.
Subjectsof examination: A written test designed toevaluate knowledge, skills and /or abilities in the following areas:
1. Ability to learn and applyinformation Thesequestions test for the ability to learn new information and apply it to answerquestions effectively. Candidates will read information presented in a TrainingLesson and then answer questions regarding the information and procedurescovered in the Training Lesson. All information needed to answer the questionswill be provided in the Training Lesson, and candidates will be able to referto the Training Lesson when answering the questions. Some of the questions mayrequire candidates to combine information from different portions of what hasbeen learned in the Training Lesson. No prior knowledge of any specific job orsubject matter is needed.
2. Basic arithmetic This section requires candidates touse basic arithmetic (add, subtract, multiply, divide) to find a missing valuein a table of numbers. Candidates will not need to refer to the Training Lessonor any other section of the test to answer the questions in this section. Allinformation needed to answer each question will be contained in this section.No knowledge of firefighting or any other job is required. Candidates shouldbring a hand-held battery- or solar-powered calculator for use on this test.Candidates will not be permitted to use the calculator function on their cellphone.
3. Reading comprehension These questions test for the ability tounderstand written materials (e.g., sentences, passages) and answer questionsabout the information presented. Candidates will be provided with reading passages,followed by questions related to each passage. Each question will requirecandidates to demonstrate that they have read and understood the informationcontained in the passage.
4. Situational judgment This sectiontests for the ability to identify appropriate and effective responses towork-related challenges. Candidates will be presented with several scenariosthat reflect the types of challenges one could encounter in a work environment.They will then be asked to rate the effectiveness of a number of possibleresponses to each scenario.

Candidates not having access toa computer or the internet may request copy of the test guide from themunicipal civil service office conducting this examination using the contactinformation found elsewhere on this announcement.
Use of Calculators is allowed. Candidatesare permitted to use quiet, hand-held solar or battery powered calculators orslide rules. Devices with typewriterkeyboards, spell checkers, personal digital assistants, address books, languagetranslators, dictionaries, or any similar devices are prohibited. NoCell Phones allowed as calculators.
If anemergency prevents you from appearing for the examination, please notify thisoffice no later than 9:00 am on the Monday following the test date, (Tuesday ifMonday is a holiday) providing verifiable documentation of the reason. A determination will be made if you will bescheduled for an alternate test date.
Additional credits for childrenof Firefighters and Police Officers killed in the line of duty: Inconformance with Section 85-a of the Civil Service Law, children offirefighters and police officers killed in the line of duty shall be entitledto receive an additional ten points in a competitive examination for originalappointment in the same municipality in which his or her parent hasserved. If you are qualified toparticipate in this examination and are a child of a Firefighter or PoliceOfficer killed in the line of duty in this municipality, please inform thisoffice of this matter when you submit your application for examination. A candidate claiming such credit has aminimum of two months from the application deadline to provide the necessarydocumentation to verify additional credit eligibility. However, no credit may be added after theeligible list has been established.

If your application is disapproved, the feewill not be refunded. You shouldcarefully review the announced minimum qualifications and any residencerequirements and apply only for those examinations for which you clearlyqualify.
Religious Observer/DisabledCandidates/Military Members: Applicants whose religious beliefs ormilitary service prevent their taking examinations on the scheduled date anddisabled candidates who require special accommodations to take the test shouldindicate the need for special arrangements. Military Service Members: If you apply for an examination during thefiling period but are on active military duty on the date of examination isscheduled, you may request a military makeup examination. Contact Amsterdam Civil Service for moreinformation. If you are on active dutyor discharged after the filing period has begun, you may apply for theexamination up to ten days before the test date.
Section 23.2 Statement: Thisexamination will be prepared and rated in accordance with Section 23.2 of the CivilService Law. The provisions of New YorkState Civil Service Law, rules and regulations dealing with the preparation andrating of examinations will apply to this examination.
Multiple Exam Takers: Ifyou have applied for both State and local government examinations, you mustnotify Amsterdam Civil Service of your intent to take both a State and a localgovernment examination. When taking botha State and a local government examination you will be required to take allyour examinations at a State examination center. You will be advised by letter when and whereto report for your examination.
Ifyou have applied for other local examinations examination, call or write toeach Civil Service Agency to make arrangements no later than two weeks beforethe date of examination, as to which test site you will be taking theexamination.
Veteran’s Credit: Veteransor disabled veterans who are eligible for additional credit must submit anapplication for veteran’s credit with their application for examination or atany time between the dates of their application for examination and the date ofestablishment of the resulting eligible list. Applications for veteran’s creditare available from this office. Veteran’s credits can only be added to apassing score on the examination.
EffectiveJanuary 1, 1998, the State Constitution was amended to permit a candidatecurrently in the armed forces to apply for and be conditionally grantedveteran’s credit in examinations. Anycandidate who applies for such credit must provide proof of military status toreceive the conditional credit. No credit may be granted after theestablishment of the list. It is theresponsibility of the candidate to provide appropriate documentary proofindicating the service was in time of war, as defined in Section 85 of CivilService Law, and that the candidate received an honorable discharge or wasreleased under honorable conditions in order to be certified at a scoreincluding veteran’s credits.
Change of Address: Itis the responsibility of the candidate to notify the Amsterdam Civil Service ofany change in name or address for the duration of the eligible list. No attempt will be made to locate candidateswho have moved.

Application Fee Waiver: Awaiver of application fee will be allowed if you are unemployed and primarilyresponsible for the support of a household. In addition, a waiver of application fee will be allowed if youdetermined eligible for Medicaid, or receiving Supplemental Security IncomePayments, or Public Assistance (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families/ FamilyAssistance or Safety Net Assistance) or are certified Job Training PartnershipAct/Workforce Investment Acteligible through a State or Local Social Service Agency. All claims for application fee waiver aresubject to verification. If you canverify eligibility for application fee waiver, complete a “Request forApplication Fee Waiver and Certification” form and submit it with yourapplication by the close of business on the application deadline as listed onthe examination announcement.
