Tom enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at age 17 while still a senior at Bishop Scully HS under the delayed enlistment program. Upon graduation in 1969 he went to boot camp at Parris Island and Advanced Infantry training at Camp Lejeune. Tom and his friend Bill Rutkowski went through boot camp together under the Buddy System. In January 1970 Tom was sent to jungle warfare training at Camp Pendleton CA and deployed to Vietnam in February, serving a 12month tour of duty. He served with Kilo 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines, 1stMarine Division as an 0311 rifleman(grunt) then as a radio operator with the 1st Platoon. He was awarded the Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation Civil Action Color First Class. Tom was assigned to the H & S Company but later returned to Kilo Company to take part in a Battalion size operation during the last month of his tour. Upon returning stateside Tom was stationed at Marine Barracks Naval Air Test Center in Patuxent River MD. He was named Marine of the month and attained the rank of Corporal before being discharged from active duty. When his three years of active duty were up he was awarded a good conduct medal and joined the Marine Corps reserve in Albany NY, first with an infantry platoon and later as a recruiter aide going to local high schools and local functions to speak about the USMC. Tom left the USMCR in 1982 attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. Tom and his wife Karen resided in Amsterdam NY.
