United States Air Force
View Banner Location

Seward was born and raised in Amsterdam and graduated from Wilbur Lynch High School in 1947. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force in 1948 at the age of 19 and served during the Korean War, repairing the exterior of planes damaged in combat to make them flight-worthy again, traveling to air bases in California and Europe.  He was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant in 1952. He married Josephine Taboleski in 1951, and shortly after their return to Amsterdam in 1952, he began working at the Amsterdam Printing & Litho. Corp., raising five children with “Jo” in the meantime. He retired from AP&L in 1989 after 37 years of service. During his younger years, “Van” played on various basketball, softball and bowling leagues, and loved to fish. In his retirement years he still enjoyed fishing, playing Pitch, a few cold beers, spending time with his children, grand children and great-grandchildren.  During his time in the Air Force and civilian life, Van traveled up and down the east coast, California, Canada and Europe, but Amsterdam was always home. That’s where he wanted to be, and Amsterdam is where he now rests. Seward passed away on May 23, 2020.
