Private First Class Eugene N. Simele son of Mr. and Mrs. Carmen Simiele was born in Amsterdam and graduated from Wilbur H. Lynch High School in 1948. He served in the U.S. Army in 1951. At the time of his induction into the Armed Forces in January 1951 he was employed at the Shuttleworth Division of Mohawk Carpet Mills. He completed basic training in California and was sent overseas in June of 1951 being assigned to the 40th Division. In 1952 he was serving in Company I, 224th Regiment, and 40th Infantry Division, which was deep in the lines on the Korean front and was killed in action. Private First Class Eugene N. Simele gave the ultimate sacrifice for his country and received a Purple Heart.
