Pfc. Chester Serafin, born 4/17/1927, the son of Albert and Anna Serafin resided on Young Avenue in Amsterdam. He enlisted in the US Army on 9/15/1950, and after completing his basic training went overseas attached to Company I, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. Pfc. Serafin was captured as a Prisoner of War on 5/18/1951 during the Korean War by the Chinese Reds in North Korea. He was released on 8/14/1953 after the signing of the Armistice. Upon returning to the US, he was awarded the Prisoner of War Medal. Also the City of Amsterdam presented Pfc. Chester Serafin with a key to the city.
