Gus graduated from Port Jefferson High School in 1957, he received both his BA degree in 1961 and his MD in 1965 from Cornell University. He was drafted at the onset of his internship in 1965 but was allowed to continue his residency program. Upon completing his surgical training in 1970 at the Medical College of Virginia he was commissioned as an Army Major and attended basic training at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. Gus then served as a trauma surgeon at the 85th Evacuation Hospital, Phu Bai, in Vietnam’s I Corps from September 1970 to September 1971. He performed life and limb saving surgery on the critically wounded. Following Vietnam, Gus served as a general surgeon at Fort Carson, Colorado Springs, Colorado.In July 1972 he began his surgical practice in Amsterdam.
