David Hawker is a native of Amsterdam, NY born to Clarence and Marcella Hawker on March 23, 1947. David graduated from Amsterdam High School in 1965, and studied at Fulton County Community College. He served in the United States Air Force from 1966-1970, as a Staff Sargent E5, in 556 Red Horse Squadron, Combat Engineers. The 556 Red Horse, Combat Engineers, were a self-sufficient, mobile, heavy construction unit capable of rapid response and independent operations, in remote high-threat environments worldwide. They provided heavy repair and construction abilities when requirements exceeded normal engineer capabilities. During his service he was deployed overseas to Japan, Korea, Philippines, Thailand, NKP, Mukdahan, and within the states to Florida, Michigan, Texas, and Washington. When David came home he married Colleen Bull, in October 1970, and had two children, Tracey and Terri. He has since retired from the Greater Amsterdam School District after 32 years of service.
