Mayor Ann Thane Will Host Walking Tour of Proposed Cultural Arts Center
March 15th, 2012From the Office of the Mayor
(Amsterdam, NY) Mayor Ann Thane will host a short walking tour of the building that is being proposed to serve as a cultural arts center on Vrooman Avenue and East Main Street in the City of Amsterdam on Thursday, March 15th at 6pm. Individuals that are interested in volunteering their time, teaching classes, and/or brainstorming ideas are invited to attend. There has been much discussion over the years, as is documented in the City’s Comprehensive Plan and from feedback from neighborhood planning sessions, of the need for such a facility. There is room to offer classes and studio space in the visual arts, music, language, history, science, crafts, life skills, games and light recreational activities, as well as opportunities for fundraisers and parties.
For those that attend, there will be a follow-up meeting in the near future to field ideas and develop a plan of action. We hope that community members will take an active role in bringing this vision to life. Please pass this invitation on to email lists, friends and family.

Fire Safety Inspections
February 16th, 2012Amsterdam City Code Chapter 90, Articles VIII 69 B (2) and (3) state that fire safety inspections shall be performed for multiple dwellings and nonresidential occupancies. The City of Amsterdam Fire Department has been tasked with these duties. The department has eight Code Enforcement Officials and twenty-four Code Complaint Technicians to perform these inspections.
Multiple dwellings include any structure that houses three or more dwelling units.
Nonresidential occupancies include, but are not limited to the following:
Buildings or rooms intended for worship, recreation or amusement such as churches, restaurants, taverns, funeral parlors, community halls, libraries, museums, etc.;
businesses, private educational facilities, factories, industrial facilities, institutional facilities, mercantile occupancies, storage facilities, utility and miscellaneous uses, etc.
The Division of Code Enforcement will mail letters to the owners of the above requesting them to contact the department and schedule an inspection. We try to accommodate the owners of the properties, but since the inspections are performed by on-duty personnel we are somewhat limited as to what hours are available for these inspections.
If you are the owner or agent for any of the above we encourage you to review the attached inspection forms for required items. Theses inspections are designed to ensure that the minimum code requirements for fire safety are being met. If you have any questions or comments please contact us at infofd@amsterdamfd.com
For more information on minimum fire safety requirements for various occupancies click on the file noted:
- Assembly Space (Church, Restaurant, Tavern, Funeral Parlor, Community Halls, Museums, etc.)
- Multiple Dwelling Public Areas (Stairways, cellars, common areas of building)
- Multiple Dwelling Unit (Each dwelling unit (apartment) in a building)
- Non-Residential (Everything else i.e. hospitals, retail, manufacturing, offices, mercantile, etc.)
