Northern and Eastern Neighborhood Brownfield Opportunity Area Public Workshops set for February 16th at St. Mary’s Church Hall and February 22nd at the Elk’s Lodge.

Amsterdam, NY – February 3, 2012 – The Northern and Eastern Neighborhoods Brownfield Opportunity Area (BOA) Advisory Committee will host a public workshop for the East End Brownfield study area on Thursday, February 16th from 6:30-8:30pm at St. Mary’s Church Hall located at 200 East Main Street in Amsterdam.

This will be the second public workshop held for the East End study area.  The purpose of this meeting will be to discuss the Brownfield program, review and confirm a community vision for the study area, and discuss desired future projects and improvements.  The meeting is open to all City residents and business owners.

The BOA Advisory Committee will also host a public workshop for the Northern Neighborhood brownfield study area on Wednesday, February 22nd from 6:30-8:30pm at the Elks Lodge located at 8 Fourth Avenue in Amsterdam.

This will be the first public workshop held for the Northern Neighborhood study area.  The purpose of this meeting will be to provide an overview of the Brownfield program, discuss strengths, weaknesses and opportunities; begin to create a vision and identify future improvements for the Northern Neighborhood.  The meeting is open to all City residents and business owners.

The workshop is supported by the New York State Department of State’s BOA Program.  The program provides financial and technical assistance to communities to develop revitalization plans and implementation strategies for areas affected by the presence of brownfield sites.

City Hall will be closed on Monday, January 16^th, in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and will reopen on Tuesday, January 17^th at 8:00 AM.

On January 1, 2012 Local Law No. 9 of 2011 took effect. This local law deals with new provisions for solicitors obtaining a license to sell within the city limits. The law also provides residents protection under this law by establishing a “DO NOT SOLICIT LIST”. This list which will be provided to solicitors, prohibit solicitors from peddling at homes of residents who do not want solicitors. Only the property address will be provided.

Residents who do wish to be added to the DO NOT SOLICIT list may call the City Clerk’s office at 841-4313 or 841-4362. A small colored notice will be sent to the resident to put on their doors if they so desire.

Violators of this law are punishable by fines established in the local law.
