Mayor Ann M. Thane and Dr. Dustin Swanger, president of Fulton-Montgomery Community College, met this week with officials from the NYS Office for Technology to discuss curriculum development and job opportunities in the area of information technology systems.

In speaking with Dr. Melodie Mayberry-Stewart, the agency’s director and State Chief Information Officer and Deputy CIO Catherine Durand, Mayor Thane and Dr. Swanger highlighted FMCC’s emerging Center for Engineering & Technology and the competitive skill set students will receive from the program. In addition, discussion with Christine Thayer, director of NYS Technology Academy, focused on the IT curricula offered by area institutions and the continued recruitment of qualified information technology professionals by NYS. Currently, consulting firms provide NYS with much of its necessary IT workforce, however the state continually seeks to provide placement in job and training opportunities to those who have attained at least entry-level IT certification.

In addition to FMCC’s partnership with an on-campus BOCES and the Business Education Alliance under Swanger’s leadership, Mayor Thane touted the successes of the Greater Amsterdam School District in forging programs such as Upward Bound with FMCC to combat the high school drop-out rate. Mayor Thane also spoke of the incentives created with Amsterdam’s potential selection for the newest NYS Office for Technology consolidated data center including necessary job creation. Citing the need for academic and professional advantage for the city’s youth and growing minority population, Thane argued that the efforts of the state technology office, local SUNY community college and the City of Amsterdam should work in concert to enhance professional development and employment opportunities in the immediate area, thereby reinforcing mutual benefits between the entities and support for the community.

A. Except as otherwise posted, winter parking rules shall be in effect throughout the City between November 1 and the following April 1 as follows:Â
        Â

(1)Â Alternate parking with odd-side parking on odd-numbered days and even side parking on even-numbered days. The effective time for such alternate parking shall commence 6:00 p.m. of the day prior to the day of permissible parking to 6:00 p.m. of the following day.Â
         (2) Posting of this general rule shall be deemed sufficient if placed at each vehicular entry to the City.Â
         (3) On those streets where parking is normally permitted on one side of the street only by ordinance heretofore adopted, the Mayor and/or the Director of Public Works, during the winter period set forth, may, by due notice given, suspend parking on either side of such streets for the limited period of time declared, not to exceed 24 hours, and for the purpose of proper street maintenance, including snow removal.

Â

The City of Amsterdam Winter Parking rules are in effect beginning November 1, 2009 until April 1, 2010. Parking regulations follow the odd-even parking principle beginning at 6:00 p.m. each evening until 6:00 p.m. the following evening. Vehicles should be parked on the odd-numbered (correlating street mailing address) side of the street the evening before the odd-numbered calendar date beginning at 6:00 p.m. Conversely, vehicles should be parked on the even-numbered (correlating street mailing address) side of the street the evening before the even-numbered calendar date beginning at 6:00 p.m.

The Amsterdam Police Department will be strictly enforcing the winter parking regulations to ensure proper clearing of city streets in the event of inclement weather. Warning and parking tickets will be issued to ensure the continued safety of city residents.

Efforts Showing Progress in One of City’s Hardest Hit Areas

The Office of Mayor Ann M. Thane is pleased to recognize continued efforts within the Amsterdam community that have taken shape in a selected neighborhood of Amsterdam’s Division Street and serve to promote the city from a positive perspective and highlight its untapped potential.

The Community Development Block Grant and the Division Street Housing Rehabilitation Program facilitated by the Urban Renewal Agency seek to promote housing improvements to meet code standards and encourage the implementation of energy efficient practices by property owners as well as helping to secure funding for the rehabilitation of the property residential units along this specified stretch of Division Street from Guy to Gardiner Streets.

Demolition continues in this selected block affected by neglected and dilapidated structures in efforts to promote safe and healthy neighborhoods for residents and their children. Six unfit property facades have already been rehabilitated through CDBG Grant funding and the city has already demolished three decaying properties. Rivercrest Development, a subsidiary of Amsterdam Housing Authority, will also begin rehabilitative construction on a property along Division and Clinton Streets in the coming months.

Community-based campaigns have also emerged in efforts to unify Division Street residents. In recent months the formation of Neighborhood Watch and Neighborhood Association programs have been successfully launched in the selected Division Street zone and continue to promote community awareness and attract positive attention to the reemerging community with such programs as graffiti removal and beautification .

The City of Amsterdam is working diligently to breathe new life into this previously underserved area with redevelopment, rehabilitation and a commitment to heal the city of pessimism by providing vision and action that promote positive change.
