Amsterdam NY, Department of Public Works & UtilitiesThe Department of Public Works (also known as the DPW) is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the City of Amsterdam's basic infrastructure. In addition they provide for the collection of solid waste, street cleaning, as well as the maintenance of various Publicly owned facilities. The DPW houses a shop staffed with 3 mechanics for the maintenance and repair of it's vehicles and equipment. Approximately 43 employees are distributed to handle the following three primary functions:

 

Streets

  • Winter operations: Maintain street plowing, sanding and snow removal
  • Summer operations include: Street cleaning, repair and maintenance of streets, storm water catch basins, curbs, and associated infrastructure.

Sanitation

  • City Garbage Recycling Schedule
  • Download a Recycling Schedule
  • City wide curbside garbage pickups split into four areas done on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday
  • Bulk pick up on Wednesday
  • Recyclables are picked up City wide under private Contract
  • The City provides for a spring cleanup week with drop off at the nearby MOSA Facility
  • All City solid waste is disposed of through MOSA

  • Operation and maintenance of approximately 64 miles of City owned water distribution and sanitary sewer collection systems.
