Codes: Building and Zoning Enforcement
The Division consisting of 3 NYS Certified building and code enforcement officers, which is managed by the Code Enforcement Supervisor, is charged to ensure that all buildings, structures, and premises, regardless of use or occupancy are subjected to the Administration and Enforcement of New York state Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code, the New York State Energy Conservation Construction Code Multiple Residence Law and the City of Amsterdam Zoning Law and Subdivision of Land along with any ordinances or other appropriate regulation of the city of Amsterdam and The Division shall exercise its powers in due and proper manner so as to extend to the public protection from hazards of fire and inadequate building construction. Conducts all reviews of the Zoning Law, site plans and subdivision of land, issues all Certificates of Occupancy, Certificates of Compliance and reviews plans and specifications to issue permits which are not limited to the following types of construction:

- New construction, alterations, repairs, renovations, reconstruction, building relocation, changes in occupancy, and changes in use or operating permits etc.
- Single and multi-family residences and additions
- Commercial and industrial buildings
- Plumbing, heating, electrical and sewer work
- Demolition, signs, roofs, swimming pools, decks, sheds and fences etc.
- View all city codes
Each of these activities requires submission of an application, fee, appropriate plans, specifications and issuance of a permit prior to any work starting or use of the space. During construction, periodic inspections are required to ensure compliance with The Codes. In addition, the Division reviews, registers, and investigates all bona-fide complaints regarding residential and commercial premises, building construction, zoning and property maintenance that allege the existence of conditions that fail to comply with the Uniform Code and/ or local law. The Division also provides technical assistance to the City's Zoning Board of Appeals and Planning Commission including applications for area variances, use variances, site plan approval and special use permits.

|Zoning Board of Appeal - 1st Thursday of each. month at 7pm at City Hall.|
|Planning Commission - 3rd Thursday of each month at 7pm at City Hall.|
All applications for use variances, area variances, special permits, site plan approval, And Land sub-divisions must be submitted two weeks and two days and no later than noon Before the scheduled meeting due to public notification requirements.
